Pahadi Architecture


The early medieval history of Kumaon is the history of the "Katyuri Dynasty". The Katyuri Kings ruled from the 7th to the 11th century, holding at the peak of their powers over large areas of Kumaon, Gharwal and Western Nepal. Temple building flourished during under the Katyuri's and the main architectural innovation introduced by them was replacement of bricks with stones.

Stone walls, mud floors, slate roofs and patangans (courtyards of graystones) can be seen in all the houses of Kumaon and some them you will see with very unique designs and hand carvings .

The main entrance also knows as kholis. The door and windows have beautiful wooden designs had paintings of various Gods and Goddesses. These pictures will give you an idea about how the houses are in Kumaon.
